Kiari at last

31 August 2011

Praise the Lord, we made it safely out to Kiari on the chopper on Monday. It is SO GOOD to be home. Well, almost home– we’re hopefully going to be able to move down to our house in a few days. Right now there’s just loads of cleaning and unpacking and catching up to do first, and we’re staying with the Ellisons to help orient them a little at the same time.

Several people have died lately in Kiari. Death is a big deal here. They have what they call a “haus krai” (house of crying– referring more to the event, which can last weeks, rather than the actual house where it takes place). Right now there are five of them going on. As our coworker says, death is very real here, with no sugar coating. People cry loudly and go around with mud or ashes on their faces. It’s pretty heartbreaking– especially when you think about the hopelessness of all these people without Christ. PLEASE, PLEASE PRAY that the Lord would do a work here in Kiari. Today we went to the funeral of a former church member who had fallen away and been church disciplined. Sailas, one of our church leaders, preached the gospel very clearly and I could see conviction on some faces. Pray that they will not brush this off but will turn to the Lord.

Well, time to head to church. Thank you for all of your prayers.

Made it to Goroka

24 August 2011

This won’t be the least bit long or juicy due to jetlag :-), but just wanted everyone to know we and all of our luggage made it safely to Goroka. Thanks for all your prayers!

Next stop PNG!

24 August 2011

We’ve made it to Hong Kong and enjoyed a tour of the city today from a missionary here– what a treat! We must say, however, that being in Hong Kong for just a day definitely confirmed in our minds our calling to a bush place like Kiari. 🙂 The best city view in the world doesn’t hold a candle to our PNG mountains!

Lord willing we’ll be arriving in Port Moresby in about seven and a half hours– 7:30 am Wednesday their time but 5:30 pm Tuesday EST. Thanks for your prayers!

We’re on our way home!

22 August 2011

I’m so sorry for the big blank between posts. Lots happened– best of all Jeff and I were married on July 23rd. Attached is a photo if you’re interested, and if you want to see more you can check out our new website, Our wedding was a beautiful gift from God and from many, many kind and generous people who worked together to make it very special– such a blessing. Thank you to all of you who came and had a part!

Our time in the States was a blur. We told everybody that 5 1/2 weeks in America was about to be the end of us! We’re now sitting in JFK airport on our way back to PNG. We fly out early this afternoon to Tokyo, then Hong Kong with a 24-hr. layover, and finally Port Moresby and then, Lord willing, arriving in Goroka on Wednesday (Tuesday evening for most of you). We’re really blessed to be traveling with Al and Nikki Ellison, who are replacing our coworkers the Smiths while they’re on furlough for this next year. They’re delightful folks and we’re really excited to work with them. We’ll be in Goroka for a few days taking care of business and getting supplies, and then hopefully flying out to Kiari on the chopper next Wednesday (Tuesday evening your time). We can’t wait!!!

Thanks so much for your prayers!
